    ABOUT THE COLLEGE

    ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Galsi Mahavidyalaya started its humble journey on 15th June 2007 with 129 students in a building provided by the Managing Committee of Galsi High School. Subsequently the college shifted to its own building at the present location, with the enthusiastic cooperation of the local well-wishers who contributed land and resources for its establishment. The Honourable founders of Galsi Mahavidyalaya aimed at bringing the benefits of collegiate education to the boys and girls belonging to economically disadvantageous rural families who could not move out and join other centres of learning which are located remotely. Dissemination of ideas, knowledge and education, providing facilities for extracurricular activities for physical, moral, social and cultural upliftment and various community-oriented outreach programmes especially for the girls are the stated goals and objectives of the Mahavidyalaya.

The college came under the grant-in-aid grid of the Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal, w.e.f. the academic session 2007-08 and received permanent affiliation from the University of Burdwan in the session 2008-09. The college got recognition under section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 in July 2016.Ever since its humble beginning in the year 2007, all the administrative bodies, teachers, office staff, students and local people have relentlessly been trying to raise the standard of the institution. Presently, the college has eleven permanent teachers (including the Principal), thirteensupport staff (including temporary staff) and twenty-two Govt. approved State Aided College Teachers (SACT), to nurture the students. In 2007, the college started with general courses in five subjects in the Arts stream, namely Bengali, English, History, Political Science and Sanskrit. In the session 2008-09, the University of Burdwan extended its affiliation to Honours in History & English. Later on, Honours courses in Bengali, Sanskrit, Philosophy, and Political Science achieved further extension of affiliationin different academic sessions.

In consonance with the introduction of the NEP 2020 from the academic session 2023-24, Galsi Mahavidyalaya offers 3 years Undergraduate Degree Programme with major in seven subjects: Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Geography and 4 years Undergraduate Honours Programme with major in six subjects: Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Political Science and Philosophy.

The college possesses a lush green campus with 60% open space. Within its limited capacity the college has arranged to provide a partially digitized library facility using the KOHA library management system to the students. Every year the college successfully organizes a number of cultural events, Freshers’ Welcome, Annual Social Function, Annual Sports, National and International Seminars/Conferences and observes the special days with full sincerity and dignity. Some of our students representing the college in the annual inter-college cultural competition and sports meet organized by the University of Burdwan have achieved remarkable positions in different events. Under the affiliation of the University of Burdwan the college has opened two units of NSS which are considered as an integral part of education in maintaining a proper campus society relationship through its community service and regular social outreach activities. The college has established several collaborations and linkages with several degree colleges, industries and NGOs fostering faculty and student exchanges, seminars, workshops, research, skill-based hands-on trainings to increase employability and various other co-curricular activities.

Majority of our students come from families with peasant background. As a co-educational institute the college has played an important role in paving the way for higher education specially for the girls coming from the agricultural hinterland of Galsi and its surroundings. Performance of our students in the University examination has always been praiseworthy. The college has made arrangements to help its students to receive various Government and non-Government scholarships that they are entitled to as well as remission of tuition fees to the needy but meritorious students, who are not receivingany scholarship. The students, if required, can also utilize ‘Students Credit Card’ facility offered by the Government of W.B. for availing educational loan.

We would like to tender our sincere thanks to Dr. J. B. Medda, Ex Inspector of Colleges, University of Burdwan, the then Headmaster, teaching and non-teaching staff of Galsi High School, Hon’ble M.P., Hon’ble M.L.A., Sabhapati, Executive Officer, Galsi II, Rice Mill Owners’ Association, Land donors, Higher Education Directorate for extending their support in the establishment and development of the college.
