The Department of English at Galsi Mahavidyalaya, The University of Burdwan has started its journey in 2007, offeringHonours courses since 2008 and General courses since 2007. The distinctive feature of the department is its commitment towards the holistic development of its students and its emphasis on paying particular attention to their mental, emotional, and intellectual well-being.The department endeavours to develop its students’ interpretive acumen and expressive prowesswithin a conducive academic environment. It consists of outstanding faculty with a wide range of specializations and research interests, includingEcocriticism, Indigenous Studies, Gender Studies, Partition Literature, Diaspora, Post-coloniality, American and Australian LiteratureShakespeare Criticism and Juvenile Literature, Literary Theory and Translation Studies, to name a few. It is a matter of great satisfaction for having a pool of extremely gifted and creative students who have brought accolades for the institution in both academic and extracurricular activities. The Department seeks to foster a culture of cooperation and collegiality between teachers and students in order to promote holistic development at all levels.
In keeping with the National Education Policy (NEP) model, which emphasizes the merits of interdisciplinary learning, the department expands its course offerings to include General Electives, Skill Enhancement Courses, Discipline-Centred ElectivesandAbility Enhancement Course. Guest speakers from India and abroad are invited to address students on various cross-current issues. Faculty members are actively involved in research works, publishing articles in UGC CARE journals and books, and presenting papers in national and international seminars.
